First of all, it is good to pay attention to our plants from the beginning by using the proper soil, which might not be the ground of your backyard. There are universal soils or special ones developed for particular kind of plants. Different plants need different soil, it does matter if we have orchids or a plant with leaves. You probably bought or received as gift a potted plant in the proper soil, but later you might need to plant it in a bigger pot, and is definitely good to find out what kind of soil it needs. If you have the proper soil, we should think about the necessary nutrients for our plants. Plants repay the care we offer them, therefor we should think about using minral or organic fertilizers.
Mineral fertilizers are often the best option for indoor plants and you will find them in liquid or powder form, sticks or granules. Between these you will also find specially developed products for different plants and universal ones as well. There are products that should be used especially for growing, blooming or the rest of the year. The stick fertilizers and granules act at the roots of the plant on a longer term, the liquid fertilizers should be used twice a month from spring to fall, after then the plant needs a period of rest. If you want to use fertilizers more often, find a weaker one or dissolve it in more water. You can find out more about mineral fertilizers here:

Organic fertilizers have a long term effect, they improve the soil and are harder to be overdozed. They are especially good for fruit trees, vegetable gardens, rose bushes or shrubs. There are fertilizers of animal origin and biohumus. You can read more about organic fertilizers here:

For plants proper light is very important. The viola, geranium, bougainvillea and gloxinia needs a lot of light, we can even use artificial light sources that will help rich blooming, while the poinsettia, kalanchoe or cyclamen garanteed will bloom if you keep them in darker places for a few weeks.
The potter flowers are also affected by temperature changes. Since the temperature in apartments is not very different at day and night, the plants will bloom later. Many species need a period of rest, when you have to water it less and keep it in a cooler place. Bromelias bloom when the air in their immediate environment contains ethylene. You can put the plant under a plastic foil together with an apple, which emits ethylene, therefor the plant will start to bloom.

Of course, every plant is different and you will need other methods for them, but is good to know what to consider when you start plant care.
