The Use of Organic Fertilizers

Those who want to deal with growing plants or garden care in a more serious manner, might worth to think about using organic fertilizers. But what kind of fertilizers are available and how should we use them? In the following we give you some advices regarding these products.

What types of organic fertilizers can we find?

We distinguish animal origin and biohumus organic fertilizers. The animal fertilizers can derive from bovine, horse, poultry. Humus is a soil layer that is rich in minerals, that come from the decomposition of organic matter, which can be absorbed by the plant and helps its development. There are several methods for the preparation of biohumus, but the goal is the same: a soil rich in minerals and nutrients.

The semi-matured compost is particulary rich in nitrogen and therefor can be only used on the upper part of the soil, otherwise damages the roots of the plants. Tha matured composted manure contains less nutrients, but is has an excellent soil improving effect and it is harder to overdose, therefor it won’t burn out the plants. The matured composted cow manure for example has a very good soil improvement and fertilizer effect, it is excellent for vegetables, fruit trees, vines and ornamental trees and bushes.

The biohumus contains all the sixteen important mineral elements that plants need, it has a neutral pH, provides a better soil airflow, retains the right amount of moisture, has excellent drainage, doesn’t have weed seeds, which have a negative impact on plant development. There are two types of biohumus, one contains the excrements of the earthworm, and is known as biohumus, and the other is the vermicompost, which, besides of this, contains the feed not consumed by worms in 50-60%, so it is qualitatively inferior to the biohumus.

How should we use organic fertilizers?

There are specially developed organic fertilizer mixes, that can be used for example for plants with flowers, small fruits, vegetables, evergreens or bushes. But we can also make a mix by our own using the right proportion  of different fertilizers and soils. For example for garden plants it is adviseable to mix cow manure and peat fiber in a ration of 1:5. In case of vegetables the recommended dose I 5-10 l/m2, when planting fruit trees , we should fill the pit with cow manure in a percent that is not more than ¼, which should be about 5-10 liters/pit. If we want to nurture fruit trees, we should use cow manure around the trunk, near the crown, which means between 5-20 liters per tree and we have to water them in. When we plant vineyards, we need about 2 liters per piece and for nutrition, about 1 liter per piece. Ornamental trees and bushes need about 20% cow manure in their plantin pot, which is about 2-5 liters, and for nutrition, trees need 1-5 l, bushes 1-2 liters of manure per piece.

The biohumus fertilizer should be mixed with potting soil for flowers in 10-20%, if we want to install or cultivate weed, the recommended amout per m2 is 1-3 liters every year, in case of planting vines the recommended amount is 1 liter, in case of fruit trees is 2 liters.

If we want to be very professional and completely sure that we do the right thing, we can ask for specific information from the Ministry of Environment in our settlement, because for plant fertilization we need to consider the specific need of the plant on one hand and the particular soil conditions on the other hand. Based on surveys made in the last years, vegetable gardens are usally overfertilized, while lawns are underfertilized.
